Ubuntu Server 12.10 with codename “Quantal Quetzal” has been released and announced by canonical. it comes with the latest Openstack release, codenamed Folsom, improvements to MAAS and the latest Argonaut LTS release of Ceph, a highly scalable distributed object storage solution.
Ubuntu Server 12.10 together with OpenStack is touted to give a faster cloud service deployment and better cost-efficiency. According to Silber, “Ubuntu Server is the reference operating system for OpenStack,” and “the fastest and easiest way to take advantage of the latest open cloud technology.”
In Addition, Ubuntu 12.10 for Server Edition is the first operating system to support Intel (NSDQ:INTC)’s Open Attestation software that authenticates cloud images to ensure that no virtual machines are a security risk. And the Ubuntu Metal-as-a-Service bare-metal provisioning tool has been updated in Ubuntu Server 12.10.
Here’s Highlights of Ubuntu 12.10 for Server Edition:
- The Folsom release of Openstack has been included. Openstack projects supported in 12.10 include Nova, Glance, Swift, Keystone, Horizon, Cinder and Quantum;
- Openstack components are deployable via Juju Charms;
- Openstack Folsom is also available for Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS in the Ubuntu Cloud Archive;
- Juju is now enabled in ARM bare metal deployments using MAAS;
- ARM support was added;
- KVM has been update to version 1.2.0;
- Xen has been updated to version 4.1.3;
- Puppet has been updated to version 2.7.18.

Ubuntu Server 12.10 is an interim release that Canonical supports for 18 months.
